Jackdaw is a native macOS utility published by Moose Softwares. This policy explains what personal data we process, why, and the rights you have under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Who is responsible
The data controller is Moose Softwares, a sole proprietorship registered with the Lyon Trade and Companies Register under SIREN 104 466 685 (104 466 685 R.C.S. Lyon). You can reach us at support.jackdaw@moose-softwares.com.
What never leaves your Mac
Your clipboard history, staged files and dictation are stored locally on your Mac and are never transmitted to us or to any third party. Sensitive entries are encrypted at rest. Dictation runs entirely on-device (using the open-source FluidAudio / Parakeet models); your audio is never uploaded.
Data we process to run your licence
To activate and periodically validate your licence, the app sends to our server (api.jackdaw.moose-softwares.com) your licence ID and a device identifier. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
To grant the one free trial available per machine, the app sends a salted, irreversible SHA-256 hash of your Mac's hardware UUID together with a device identifier. The raw hardware UUID never leaves your Mac — only the hash. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in preventing repeated abuse of the free trial (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Server logs
When the app contacts our servers (hosted on Amazon Web Services), they automatically record technical data such as your IP address, a timestamp and the app / macOS version. Legal basis: legitimate interest in the security and reliability of the service. These logs are kept for a short period.
Payments
Purchases are processed by Stripe. Stripe collects your name, email and payment details as an independent controller; we never see your card number. We receive your email and licence / subscription status in order to deliver and validate your licence. See Stripe’s Privacy Policy.
App updates
Jackdaw checks for updates through Sparkle. To serve the correct build, the update server receives your IP address and your app version, macOS version and Mac model. Legal basis: legitimate interest in delivering updates and security fixes.
Link previews
When you copy a web link, Jackdaw may fetch that site’s favicon to show a preview. This sends a request from your Mac directly to that third-party website, which may log your IP address. It happens only for links you copy, and involves no data of ours.
Website analytics
When enabled, this website uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookieless, aggregate and does not track or profile individuals.
Recipients and sub-processors
- Amazon Web Services — hosting of the website and licensing API
- Stripe — payment processing
- Cloudflare — content delivery and cookieless analytics
- GitLab — support tickets you send us
International transfers
Some providers (e.g. Stripe, Cloudflare) may process data outside the European Union under appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
How long we keep data
- Licensing and trial records — for the life of the licence plus any legal retention period
- Invoicing data — 10 years, as required by French accounting law
- Server logs — short-term only
Your rights
Under the GDPR you may access, rectify, erase, restrict or receive a portable copy of your data, and object to processing based on our legitimate interest. To exercise these rights, email support.jackdaw@moose-softwares.com. You may also lodge a complaint with the French data-protection authority, the CNIL.
Children
Jackdaw is not directed at children under 15 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “last updated” date above always reflects the current version.
